A collaborative initiative with a steering committee of local and statewide humanities organizations, facilitated by the Rhode Island Council for the Humanities and supported by the van Beuren Charitable FoundationCatalyzing Newport utilizes a visiting scholars program that draws on extensive experience, national and international networks and the creative excellence of established experts (known as “catalysts”) to engage local communities in meaningful exchanges. Over three years (starting in 2014), visiting catalysts traveled to Newport to apply their expertise during five-day residencies to address local and national challenges related to urban growth and economy, digital culture, cultural entrepreneurship and diversity and prosperity.

At the end of each Catalyst visit, a publication was distributed as an overview of the residencies. With a large folder of images and a long word document, I was asked to establish a system for future publications based on the existing brand. Using color to distinguish each Catalyst, I developed two publications to enable the Catalyzing Newport team to create the remaining issues. Infographics designed helped establish a new icon system which is featured on the website.

The first report on Tom Scheinfeldt Catalyst Residency explores how a “collaboration first” approach can accelerate new ways of thinking and impact the design and production of scholarly work.

The second report is on the Knight Foundation Catalyst Residency. During their visit, the team led diverse cultural, historical and community leaders through a process of dialogues and site visits which leveraged their collective strengths to inspire the design of a place-based pilot project. The catalyst residency culminated with a project plan produced and led by a Local Action Team implemented in Newport in 2015-16.
