Branding

As part of Nick Allen’s inaugural campaign for the Maryland House of Delegates in District 8 in 2022, he wanted to have a fresh look which felt professional but approachable. Capitalizing on his youth and energy, the design needed to contrast with his older, more familiar opponent. As a graduate of West Point, I also leaned on his military leadership training to create a simple but effective identity.

For the brand, the core element is the logo. Nick Allen is set in Arbutus Slab, with no adjustments. This font offers ample spacing which helps the logo read in both small and large formats, making it versatile and accessible. The political office and district number is set in Mr. Eaves Modern. This font is light and airy, projecting a clean look with solid shapes. As a subtle nod to Nick’s favorite franchise, the S in delegates is manipulated to replicate the S from Star Wars.

While the logo was designed to project Nick’s discipline and leadership, skyline and transportation icons help the brand feel more approachable and youthful. The color palette is based on the gold, black and red of the Maryland state flag to give his campaign some Old Line State pride.
