The Sarah Doyle Center for Women and Gender at Brown University hosted artist Consuelo Jimenez Underwood from October 2019 through May 2020 in their gallery who’s work is a reflection of personal border experiences. Underwood weaves narratives of the U.S./Mexico border and its effect on people, communities, and the natural environment with engaging materials to create large-scale art. I was asked to design new creative for a series of posters, digital banner, wall graphics for the exhibit, as well as collaborate with the university photographer to create a time-lapse video and high resolution images.
With complete design freedom from the client, I used flowers and textures from the artist’s previous work and highlighted the many layers of Underwood’s installations through color and scale. The first poster was to promote the exhibits opening, featuring Underwood’s previous creations, using the cool blue and emerald gradient. The second poster was more vibrant and exciting utilizing material from the Sarah Doyle Center’s show. This work was the product of successful collaboration across the design and marketing team, along with the client.
